Alright here's a little more detailed information on the data protection act,

The data protection act came into force on March 1st of 2000. This is a revised version the Data Protection Act of 1998. The revisions were put into place to put stricter guidelines on the way that the personal and sensitive data is stored and also used by organizations. This data was collected in many different ways, maybe from a form you filled out online, or your employee information, business contacts, suppliers, and many other various ways. Some of this information you would certainly not want in the wrong hands, ecspeccially your sensitive data.

Your personal data would be your name, address, phone number, payroll information. Your sensitive data would be your social security number, sexual orientation, and medical condition. Imagine the possibilities that someone can do with this type of information in their hands. Your credit can be destroyed in just a few short days.

This act has placed much more restrictions on the way that your information is transferred and stored, with many security measures in place. So you can rest easy that the chances for something like your social security or credit card information getting into the wrong hands is much more unlikely to today then it would have a few years ago.
